Yorkshire Terriers, or yorkies for short, are a small breed of dog that was developed in the Yorkshire area of England in the 1800's. The dog is characterized by its small stature and silky smooth fur coat. The yorkie has become a favorite of people all over the world as it has become a famous breed of dog with many desirable traits for all those looking to enjoy the companionship of a dog. Yorkies have been known to make great companion dogs and do well with an owner who can adore them and smother them in love and friendship. The yorkie has become more of show dog recently and has been accepted by many dog judging competition all over the world. There are several things that define a yorkie and make it the well loved dog that it is today.

The coat of a yorkie is defined in one of two ways. They are either classified as having a silky coat or a soft coat. A silky coat is most desired in the show dogs as it makes for a much more presentable and style able hair style. The hair should be based on its quality of color, the quality of the hair, the silkiness of the hair, and the texture of the hair. Typically the hair should have some what of a glossy finish on it. It should be a type of shiny and reflective, but not overly powerful. They are looking for a particular look in a show dog and will judge even minor flaws in the coat. The hair is also supposed to be straight and fine. The hair should be fine and not overly think. This helps with the softness and silkiness of the coat. A nice fine coat will be much softer and silkier than a coat made up of thicker more course hair. If the yorkie has thicker hair it may not feel as soft or silky to the touch and could garnish negative points for that in a show. Traditional show yorkies have slightly grown out hair that is well maintained and parted down the back. The look and feel of the coat is very important for those that are looking into a show dog and wish to have their dog judged. The smallest thing can deduct points from your dog. Yorkies that have a soft coat instead of a silky one usually have shorter hair and do not make good show dogs. They are still great to have around for pets and provide a soft and cuddly dog for your whole family to enjoy. The shorter softer coats are still great in the dog and have no negative impacts unless you are looking for a show dog. The soft short hair is easy to maintain and does not need very much brushing or taking care of.
